KU soccer bolsters defense

Jayhawks sign trio from Colorado

Three high school soccer players signed letters of intent Wednesday with Kansas University.

All three — Afton Sauer, Kelsey Archuleta and Colleen Quinn — played for the same club team in Colorado for the past four years. Sauer and Archuleta are from Denver suburbs and Quinn is from Fort Collins.

“We feel really good about this year’s recruiting class,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “The size is not very big, but we did not graduate many in this year’s seniors.”

The Jayhawks return all of their starters at forward and midfield, including All-American forward Caroline Smith, so Francis opted to recruit defensive players only.

Sauer earned all-state at Thunder Ridge High. Archuleta was named Best Defender by The Rocky Mountain News in 2003 and earned all-state honors at Dakota Ridge High. Quinn earned all-state honors as a goalkeeper at Poudre High and was a two-time all-conference first-team selection.
