For the majority of this season, Seabury Academy’s boys basketball players didn’t know what it felt like to win, because the Seahawks started 0-8.

Now Seabury might have forgotten what it feels like to lose.

Tuesday, the Seahawks secured a school record-setting third-straight triumph, defeating Kansas School for the Deaf, 46-36, at Seabury.

“This is really all about the kids growing up and maturing on the court,” Seabury coach Marcus Heckman said of his team’s record for consecutive wins since the Seahawks became a Kansas State High School Activities Assn.-sanctioned school last season.

“The kids are just clawing and fighting and doing whatever it takes to pull out a couple of victories.”

That kind of gritty execution was exactly what Seabury (3-8) showed in its victory over KSD.

While a lot of the plays weren’t pretty, the Seahawks used a stifling second-half defense to slow the Jackrabbits.

“Our defensive play, especially our intensity on defense, has been the key element in our last few games,” Heckman said.

That, and sophomore guard Adam Davis, who has scored 43 percent (55 of 127) of Seabury’s points since the Seahawks started their streak with a 46-36 victory over Heritage Christian a week ago.

Davis scored a game-high 18 against KSD.

“I’ve kind of taken upon myself to step up and be a leader as of late,” Davis said. “More than anything, though, we’re really playing with a lot of confidence right now.”

With 4:57 left in the fourth, KSD cut the deficit to 34-30, but Seabury closed with a 12-6 run.

Seabury’s Grayson Dillon reached double figures with 10 points, while Paul Bireta added seven, and Matt Parker scored six.

“We’re just trying to keep this going right now and make a push at the end of the season,” Davis said.

Seabury’s game against Barstow — originally scheduled for Jan. 16 but postponed in the third quarter because of a power outage — will be completed Feb. 18 at Seabury.
