Ryun calls for reduced spending

U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., says he’s encouraged by President Bush’s efforts to control spending.

But Ryun, whose district includes western Lawrence, says more fiscal restraint is needed.

“I know that cutting or freezing spending is not always an appealing process, but it is something that must be done,” Ryun said in a prepared statement. “I urged my fellow colleagues to join me in tightening the belt on Federal spending.”

Although Ryun called for tighter spending controls, he touted some of the budget increases going to Kansas military installations.

“Included in the President’s budget is an additional $124 million for Kansas military bases in 2005,” he said. “If approved, this funding would benefit military operations at Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth and the Army National Guard in Topeka. It is very important that we continue to provide the necessary funding for our men and women in uniform who risk their lives for our freedom.”

The following is a breakdown of the funding included for Kansas military installations:

Fort Riley
¢ $41 million for barracks complex renewal
¢ $33 million for military family housing
¢ $3 million for a communications center

Fort Leavenworth
¢ $44 million for Lewis and Clark Instructional Facility

Army National Guard in Topeka
¢ $3 million for a readiness center
