Rice services

Graveside services for Helen Christine Rice, 98, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Rice died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

She was born April 24, 1905, in Lawrence, the daughter of Frank H. and Caroline A. (Mathis) Jahns. She attended Bismark Rural Grade School in Douglas County and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1924. She attended Emporia State University.

Mrs. Rice taught at Douglas County Rural Grade School and was later a house manager for Gertrude Sellards Pearson Hall at Kansas University for 10 years. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

She married William M. Rice on June 3, 1925, in Lawrence. He died Mary 28, 1963.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Rice, Baldwin, and James Rice, Garland, Texas; a sister, Marguerite Parnell, Lawrence; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the funeral home.
