Package explosion injures 1

? Authorities were investigating after a Washington County man was hurt when a package mailed to him exploded when he opened it.

U.S. Postal Service Inspector John Salanitro said the improvised explosive device was mailed from Wamego earlier this week and arrived Friday at the home of the victim, Daniel A. Owens.

“Upon taking the package indoors and opening it, it detonated,” Salanitro said. “There were no life-threatening injuries.”

Authorities said Owens’ right hand was hurt but the extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately known.

“I can assure you this wasn’t a random act of terrorism,” Salanitro said. “People shouldn’t be worried about randomly receiving packages like this.”

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the crime.
