Don Joseph ‘D.J.’ Hallowell Jr.

Graveside services for Don Joseph “D.J.” Hallowell Jr., 59, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14.

Mr. Hallowell died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Topeka, the son of Don Joseph Sr. and Margaret (Hinshaw) Hallowell.

Mr. Hallowell graduated from Topeka High School in 1962. He graduated from Kansas University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He later did graduate studies at KU and studied calligraphy in London.

He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, serving as a Titan missile commander in Strategic Air Command.

Mr. Hallowell was a retired free-lance calligrapher and artist.

He was a member of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and the Frank Lloyd Wright Assn. He also was a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

He married Sylvia A. Foose on Aug. 19, 1968, in North Little Rock, Ark. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a sister, Marcia Bertuca, Wichita; and three nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, sent in care of the mortuary.
