Raymond F. Barland

Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond F. Barland, 91, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14.

Mr. Barland died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 30, 1913, in Damar, the son of Napoleon and Olive Oetna Saindon Barland. He graduated from Salina High School and studied engineering at Kansas University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Mr. Barland served in the U.S. Army field artillery and motorpool from 1942 to 1945, including time in the South Pacific, and was discharged as a sergeant. He had a Nash car and Diamond “T” truck dealership as well as a produce route and truck company in Beloit. He started University Motors, a Packard dealership in Lawrence, in 1947 with his brothers, Delmar and Leroy. He later worked for Kansas Turnpike Authority until his retirement in 1983.

He married Emma Deane Wolz on Nov. 20, 1941, in Beloit. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Virginia Barland, Lawrence, and Sheryl Payne, Topeka; three sons, Robert, Overland Park, and Brian and Douglas, both of Lawrence; three brothers, Delmar, Lawrence, Leroy, Washburn, N.D., and Jerome, Smith River, Calif.; two sisters, Jeanette Swartzman, Topeka, and Victorine Vetter, Lawrence; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, where a rosary will be said at 10 a.m.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., Hospice Care in Douglas County or the KU Endowment Association, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
