Services for John Richard Chaney, 88, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church. Burial will precede the service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Chaney died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2004, at The Windsor of Lawrence.
He was born Aug. 13, 1916, in Coffeyville, the son of Bert and Eva Richarz Chaney. He graduated from Field Kindley High School and attended Coffeyville Junior College, and was active in sports at both schools.
Mr. Chaney was a superintendent at the Sunflower Ordnance Plant at De Soto. He earned a chartered life underwriter degree and became a general agent for Farmers and Bankers Life Insurance Co. of Wichita. He worked in the insurance industry in Lawrence for more than 50 years.
He was a 60-year member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder, board member and Sunday school teacher. He was a longtime member of Lawrence Country Club, where he served as president. He also served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a 32nd degree Mason.
He married Ruth Virginia "Betty" Huddleson on June 29, 1939, in Coffeyville. She died earlier.
Survivors include three daughters, Marcia Kerr, Lawrence, Carol Dema, Great Bend, and Patty Harwood, Dallas; a son, John Jr., Lawrence; four brothers, Edwin and Robert, both of Coffeyville, Bert Jr., Hutchinson, and George, Ottawa; five sisters, Edna Hay, Cape Girardeau, Mo., Mary Knight and Ethel Currier, both of Coffeyville, and Margaret Parker and Wanda Hunt, Owasso, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Thursday at the funeral home after the memorial service.
The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of the funeral home.
