John L. McCabe

Memorial services for John L. McCabe, 81, Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Lawrence Funeral Chapel.

Mr. McCabe died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born March 26, 1923, in Fond du Lac, Wis., the son of Arthur Lee Sr. and Florence Gertrude Molleson McCabe. He moved to Lawrence from Denver in 1993.

Mr. McCabe served in the U.S. Army in the 315th Heavy Bombardment Group in World War II as a B-29 crewman in the northern Pacific.

He attended the universities of Western Michigan and Colorado, majoring in engineering. He had worked as an engineer in the 1950s. He then worked as a general contractor in Denver before retiring in 1975. After retiring, he taught math and drafting in the schools of suburban Denver. In Lawrence, Mr. McCabe served as a substitute teacher. He also wrote for the Kansas Senior Press and the Lawrence Journal-World. He wrote more than 20 workbooks on how to apply mathematics to everyday workplace problems.

He was a member of the Colorado Society of Engineers and the 20th Air Force Assn.

Mr. McCabe married Myrtle Leora Shaw on March 17, 1946, in Denver. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Steven, Lawrence; a brother, Arthur Lee, Jackson, Mich.; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
