Sources say KU’s Toomey has left team

Kansas University football linebacker Gabriel Toomey has left the team, sources have told the Journal-World and 6News.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Toomey, who was a third-team All-Big 12 Conference linebacker in 2003, battled injuries throughout the 2004 season and lost playing time as a result.

The sources wouldn’t elaborate on reasons for Toomey’s departure, but health could be a factor.

Toomey, who just completed his junior season, finished with 54 tackles, including seven for a loss. His 2004 season was overshadowed by his sophomore year, when he was second on the team with 121 tackles and led KU to the Tangerine Bowl.

KU’s linebacker position still is stacked, with Nick Reid, Banks Floodman and Kevin Kane returning. The Jayhawks also have received a nonbinding oral commitment from junior-college linebacker Eric Washington for next season.
