K.C. man charged in random shootings

? A night of heavy drinking after Thanksgiving dinner fueled a random shooting rampage that left two women dead, prosecutors said in charging a Kansas City man with their deaths.

Timothy McClendon, 27, was charged Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court with two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action and one count each of robbery, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

He is accused of shooting into two vehicles on the morning of Nov. 26, fatally wounding Raevena McClenton, 27, and Norma J. Parker, 55. Police said McClendon did not know the women, who were being driven to work when they were shot.

McClendon had been charged with domestic assault in an alleged attack on his girlfriend just a few hours before the shooting spree. He is being held in federal custody on a charge of violating probation.

According to court records, McClendon’s girlfriend said he drank a fifth of brandy and a fifth of cognac during Thanksgiving dinner. She said that after they returned to her home, they argued and McClendon first punched her, then pointed a gun at her before leaving with a friend.

Authorities believe McClendon eventually met two other men at a bar and got a ride with them back to his girlfriend’s neighborhood. One shot was fired, but no one was hit and prosecutors said that might have been an accident.

About 2 1/2 hours after returning to the neighborhood, prosecutors said, McClendon pistol-whipped the driver of the car that took him there, until the man fled and McClendon took the car.

The fatal shootings started about 30 minutes later, prosecutors said, after McClendon first fired into a house without hitting anyone.

The stolen car then ran a red light and nearly hit another car. Prosecutors say McClendon shot into the second car, hitting McClenton in the head and the driver in the jaw, then fired at a pickup in which Parker was riding.

Both women died at hospitals. McClendon surrendered to police on the domestic assault complaint three days later. He has denied hitting or pointing a gun at his girlfriend, and denies involvement in the fatal shootings.
