Insensitive story

To the editor:

Why did you find it necessary (as part of your new, improved format, perhaps?) to make “Surviving the holidays” the lead article on the front page usually reserved for news. Would it not have been more suitable for the “Pulse” section?

My first reaction on seeing it was one of dismay and incredulity at your misplaced focus on pandering to the overindulged. Has it not occurred to you that the headline itself is a slap in the face to the many in our community whose daily struggle is not to survive the holidays, but to survive, period: the unemployed, the working poor living from paycheck to paycheck, the homeless.

Such gross insensitivity on the part of a hometown paper that prides itself on being community-minded is inexcusable.
