Turnpike bridge to close for approaching project

Overpass will be replaced as road widens to six lanes between Lecompton, Topeka

The Kansas Turnpike’s approaching widening project is about to take out another bridge.

A turnpike overpass along Douglas County Road 1023 will close to traffic Tuesday or Wednesday, said David Jacobson, a project manager for the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The bridge is about seven miles west of the South Lawrence Trafficway, 1.5 miles east of the Shawnee County line.

The authority is replacing the bridge as part of a planned $90 million project to widen the turnpike from four to six lanes between the Lecompton interchange and Topeka.

With work to widen the turnpike expected to begin early next year, Jacobson said, bridge crews are “under the gun” to get their jobs done on time.

A.M. Cohron & Son Inc., of Atlantic, Iowa, has until Dec. 17 to be finished with its replacement of the bridge along County Road 1023, Jacobson said. Traffic will be detoured to County Road 1029, which is 4.5 miles to the east.

The bridge is one of three being replaced by the company as part of a $2.2 million contract.

A new bridge along East 300 Road is expected to open to traffic by the middle of this week, said Lisa Callahan, a turnpike spokeswoman. The bridge has been closed since February.

A.M. Cohron also has been working since June 7 on the overpass along East 800 Road. Jacobson expects that bridge to be open by Dec. 1.

“We’re hoping it will go faster than that,” he said.

The bridge work does not affect traffic on the turnpike, officials said.

All three of the new bridges will be longer than their predecessors and feature wider lanes, Jacobson said.
