Heat advisory issued for area

Lawrence will get a bit steamy today — humid conditions and warm temperatures will push the heat index above 105 degrees by late afternoon.

“Be very careful if you have to be outdoors today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “We’re going to see those heat indices up in the dangerous levels.” The National Weather Service recommends staying out of the sun and drinking plenty of liquids.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon until 7 p.m. for Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. And the same conditions will apply to Lawrence and Douglas County, although there has been no official heat advisory issued, Schack said.

Temperatures were in the 70s this morning, but were expected to climb to a high of 95 by the afternoon, she said. The heat index, a combination of humidity and temperature, was expected to be between 105 to 108 today, she said.

Temperatures will cool off overnight, with the low dropping to 73 by Friday morning.

Friday’s temperature will climb to 86 before a cold front comes through. Winds will shift from westerly 5 to 10 mph to northeasterly 10-20 mph.

The cold front brings a chance of rain starting in the late afternoon, with a better chance coming Friday night and Saturday morning, Schack said

Saturday’s morning low will be 66 with the high reaching 75. The rain is expected to linger through the day on Saturday, Schack said.
