Anaheim annihilates K.C.

DaVanon hits for cycle as Angels complete sweep

? Jeff DaVanon became the first Angels player in 13 years to hit for the cycle, and drove in four runs, leading Anaheim to a 21-6 victory Wednesday night that completed a seven-game season sweep of the Kansas City Royals.

Jose Molina hit his first career grand slam, and Garret Anderson had five RBIs and three hits, including a three-run homer. Darin Erstad and Vladimir Guerrero had three hits each, and Erstad scored four runs.

Anaheim tied a season high with 22 hits and set a franchise home record for runs. It was the first time the Angels have ever swept an AL opponent in a season series during their 44-year history.

DaVanon hit a two-run double in the third inning against Mike Wood (2-6), a triple in the fourth, an RBI single in the fifth and hit his seventh homer of the season leading off the seventh against Scott Sullivan. He became the fourth player in club history to complete the cycle, the first since Dave Winfield at Kansas City on June 24, 1991. Jim Fregosi did it twice and Dan Ford also accomplished the feat.

DaVanon is the sixth player to hit for the cycle this season, joining Milwaukee’s Chad Moeller, Pittsburgh’s Daryle Ward, Philadelphia’s David Bell, the New York Mets’ Eric Valent and Texas’ Mark Teixeira.

Ramon Ortiz (5-7), who recorded back-to-back victories for the first time in 13 starts this season, was staked to an 11-1 lead and allowed six runs and 12 hits in six innings. Wood gave up eight runs, six hits and three walks in 31/3 innings.

Anaheim batted around in the third and fourth against Wood and relievers Matt Kinney and Shawn Camp.

David DeJesus drove Ortiz’s second pitch of the game just over the 18-foot wall in right-center for his second career homer. The other one also was a first-inning leadoff shot, at Kansas City on July 16 against Minnesota’s Brad Radke.

Notes: The Royals were swept in a season series of more than six games for the fourth time in the franchise’s 36-year history. They were 0-12 against the 1970 World Series champion Orioles, 0-10 against the 1998 champion Yankees, and 0-7 against the 2002 Orioles — who lost 95 games. … Kansas City’s three errors raised its total to 111, tying the New York Mets for the most in the majors. … The only time the Royals swept the Angels in a season series was 1981 (6-0). But seven other scheduled games between the teams were canceled that July due to a players’ strike. The Royals haven’t won a season series from the Angels since 1996 (8-4).
