Anaheim wins again

K.C. error costly as Angels rally

? Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer, and the Anaheim Angels converted a throwing error by Kansas City Royals second baseman Desi Relaford into the tying and go-ahead runs in a 7-5 victory Tuesday night that extended their winning streak to seven games.

Adam Kennedy was 4-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single for the Angels, who won for the 15th time in 19 games and are a season-best 18 games over .500 (72-54).

John Lackey (11-10) earned his seventh victory in nine decisions, throwing 94 pitches in just five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. One was a three-run triple by Calvin Pickering, who has 11 RBIs in three games since the Royals promoted him from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a hitless eighth and recorded his 100th strikeout of the season in just 651/3 innings.

Rodriguez, who two years ago became the youngest pitcher to win a World Series game, is the fifth pitcher in the Angels’ 44-year history to strike out at least 100 batters in a season without starting a game. The others were Mark Clear (105 in 1980), DeWayne Buice (109, 1987), Bryan Harvey (101, 1991) and Troy Percival (100, 1996).

Percival pitched a scoreless ninth, becoming the only active pitcher in the majors with nine consecutive seasons of at least 25 saves.

Royals rookie John Buck led off the fifth with a drive over the center-field wall for his sixth home run and a 5-4 lead.

But the Angels regained the lead in the bottom half against reliever Dennys Reyes (3-6), whose wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Molina to score the tying run. Kennedy scored the go-ahead run on David Eckstein’s groundout. Both runs were unearned because of Relaford’s error on Molina’s routine grounder.

Kansas City's Aaron Guiel, bottom, slides into second base on an attempted steal as Anaheim's David Eckstein waits for the throw. Guiel was out on the play in the Angels' 7-5 win over the Royals Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif.

Kennedy made it 7-5 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Angels tied it at 4 in the third on a controversial play at the plate, after Guillen drove in two runs with his 26th homer. Jeff DaVanon doubled and headed for home on Kennedy’s single. Buck appeared to have the plate blocked as he took the throw from center fielder David DeJesus, but umpire Dana DeMuth ruled the runner safe and got an earful from manager Tony Pena.

Notes: Scot Shields, right behind Rodriguez with 94 strikeouts, pitched two scoreless innings for Anaheim and fanned three in the seventh. … Royals 1B Mike Sweeney was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of irritation in his back, and K.C. recalled OF Alexis Gomez from Triple-A Omaha. … The Angels have homered in eight straight games, their longest streak of the season.
