Pizza delivery driver’s car reported stolen

Twice in two days this weekend, the same Papa John’s pizza delivery driver was the victim of theft on the Kansas University campus.

First, someone stole a “car topper” with a Papa John’s logo about 11 p.m. Friday off the driver’s car as he was parked outside Murphy Hall.

Then, about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, the driver left his car unlocked and running as he made a delivery at Templin Hall, 1515 Engel Road. When he came out, he saw someone in the car driving away. He tried to stop it but had to jump out of the way, according to a KU police report.

Police in St. Joseph, Mo., found the car abandoned about 3:40 a.m. Monday.

Police squad car damaged in struggle

A Lawrence Police officer was slightly injured early Sunday in a struggle with a 17-year-old Lawrence boy, police said Monday.

Officers subdued the boy with pepper spray after the struggle, in which he kicked out the window of a Lawrence Police car.

Police responded shortly before 7 a.m. to a home in the 400 block of Michigan Street after getting a call that the teen was out of control and damaging property inside the home. He began fighting with siblings after coming home intoxicated, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

When officers arrested him and put him in the car, he was able to unfasten his seatbelt and kick the window, causing about $500 in damage. Glass from the window cut one officer’s face and the boy’s hand, according to a police report.

He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Chancellor on board of Hall Foundation

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway has been named to the Hall Family Foundation’s board of directors.

Hemenway is the third KU chancellor to serve on the foundation’s board. W. Clarke Wescoe and Franklin Murphy previously served.

“Bob’s perspective as a leader within the public and not-for-profit sectors will be a valuable addition to our board,” said Donald J. Hall, the foundation’s chairman. “He is widely respected by civic, not-for-profit and academic leaders as well as elected officials within Kansas City and the region. And he understands the critical role that a progressive partnership of public and private institutions plays in advancing society.”

The foundation, the philanthropic arm of Hallmark Cards, contributes to a variety of interests in the Kansas City area. It announced in 2001 that it would contribute $42 million to KU for life sciences and humanities projects.
