Calvary Temple Assembly of God

The Couriers Quartet will sing at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 S.W. 29th St. Terrace. Admission is free.

First Christian Church

Patrick and Nita Gottstein will dedicate their son, Evan, at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

Junior and senior high youth groups start a new year and meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays in the church’s youth center. Evenings feature a snack bar, games, Bible studies and service projects.

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church

First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, 1646 Vt., will have a community benefit sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 28 at the church.

The sale will include clothing, household items, books, baked goods, barbecue, a car wash and children’s activities.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to support homeless in the community.

First United Methodist Church

Babies are wanted for the Sonshine Nursery at Discover Day. Children ages 2 months to 20 months are invited to play from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mondays at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., while parents grocery shop, run errands or meet a friend for coffee.

Annual United Methodist Women’s rummage sale will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at the church. Bargains on Aug. 28 include purchases for $1.50 per bag.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

There will be a “Student Welcome BBQ” at 5:30 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 Bob Billings Parkway.

All students from Kansas University, Haskell Indian Nations University and Baker University are welcome to attend this free event, which features a concert by The Billions.

“Rally Day” will be at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the church. Bring your children to sign up for a new year of Sunday school.

The initial Lutheran Student Fellowship campus supper of the new academic year will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church’s Friendship Center. All students are welcome.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Women are invited to attend the annual Women’s Ministry Fall Kickoff at 9 a.m. today at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway. Light brunch will be served. Plus a presentation of upcoming events, Bible studies and fall retreat.

“Pizza with the Pastor” will be held after the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service. This is for those who are new to Lawrence Wesleyan and want to learn more.

Moms In Touch International

Plymouth Congregational Church

Johannah Cox, clarinetist, will perform during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday traditional service at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. The Gathering of Grace band will play at the 11:15 a.m. Sunday contemporary service.

A Taize service will start at 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel.

A work day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 28 to prepare the church for Start-Up Sunday. To sign up, call the church at 843-3220.

Start-Up Sunday will be Aug. 29. Christian education activities for all ages begin their new fall programs.

St. Luke AME Church

St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church, 900 N.Y., is having its annual Men’s & Women’s Day Celebration, featuring a family and friends gathering from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Participants are asked to bring a covered dish. The church will provide hot dogs.

A musical jubilee program will start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, featuring Lawrence-area choirs and church representatives.

A catfish dinner sale will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28. Tickets cost $5 for children, $7 for adults.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

Special clips from the movies “Antz” and “Fiddler on the Roof” will accompany sermons by the Rev. Darrel Proffitt at the 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Ministry Fair will follow each of the Sunday services.

Two-day spiritual gifts workshop will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 28.

Teaching Guys Infinite Wisdom

Teaching Guys Infinite Wisdom, an activity for Lawrence-area Christian men, will start meeting at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday at Backyard Burgers, 2351 W. 31st St.

The nondenominational meetings, which will run for 13 weeks, are 75 minutes and include lessons in character and integrity, small-group accountability and coffee and bagels.

Trinity Lutheran Church

“Welcome Back Night” will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., for youth returning or new to the Faith Inkubators confirmation program.

Program will be led by Adam Boxberger and D.J. Whetter, the church’s youth directors, and the Rev. Gary Teske, lead pastor.

Global concerns team, a new group gathering to address world issues of hunger and need around the world, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room to plan a world hunger emphasis for September.

All are welcome to attend a “tying party” at 10 p.m. Friday in the social room to help tie quilts made by the church’s women for Lutheran World Relief and other needy organizations.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Rev. Sam Mason, the new assistant to the rector, will preach and celebrate at both Sunday services at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Soloist at 10:30 a.m. service will be Tanya Low, contralto. She is a longtime member of the church and the adult choir. She will sing “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.”

The Rev. Jonathon Jensen will meet with Christian education teachers after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service in the nave.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

An all-fellowship work day and picnic will be from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 5 at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

The first Sunday service, with a joint program, water Communion and in-gathering, will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 12.

University Community of Christ

Volunteers from University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive, will serve from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen.

Bible study class at 10 a.m. Tuesday will read and discuss John, Chapter 13. All are welcome to participate.

There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service Wednesday.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Bill Woodard, the new pastor of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service.

An ice-cream social to welcome Woodard and his wife, Claudia, will be at 4 p.m. Community members are welcome to attend.

Williamstown Assembly of God

The Royal Rangers of Williamstown Assembly of God recently traveled to Salina to participate in the Kansas District Powwow. More than 170 boys and sponsors from across the state gathered for the three-day event of camping, training and competition between Outposts.

Out of eight categories, the Royal Rangers took seven trophies, including five first places and two second places. These recognized group skills and teamwork.

Sponsors and boys who attended were: Terry Newell, district training coordinator and outpost commander; David Juedes, district first aid director; commanders Woody Hall, Tom Ruff Jr. and Isaac Fisher; rangers Ryan Alexander, Cameron Carter, Peder Risher, Austin Higgins-Younkin; and guests Stevie Johnston and Clinton Ruff.

Allegra Fisher, a junior at Perry-Lecompton High School and a member of Williamstown Assembly of God, recently competed in two categories at the National Assemblies of God Fine Arts Festival in Austin, Texas. She placed first and received a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice.
