Kansas fall crops flourishing

? Crops are thriving in Kansas, as work gets under way to prepare fields for winter wheat planting later this fall, Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday.

In its weekly crop weather update, the agency reported 75 percent of the state now has adequate to surplus topsoil moisture. Subsoil moisture also is improving, with 64 percent listed as adequate to surplus.

All that moisture bodes well for fall-harvested crops as well as the upcoming wheat planting.

This week’s Kansas crop condition update reflects that optimism:

  • Corn condition was rated as 25 percent excellent, 55 percent good and 16 percent fair. Three percent was ranked as poor and 1 percent as very poor.
  • About 77 percent of the soybeans have set pods. Their condition was rated as 20 percent excellent, 64 percent good, 13 percent fair and 3 percent poor.
  • About 14 percent of milo was turning color. Their condition was pegged as 17 percent excellent, 58 percent good, 20 percent fair, 4 percent poor and 1 percent very poor.
  • Cotton condition was rated as 14 percent excellent, 55 percent good, 30 percent fair and 1 percent poor.
