John R. Cox

? Memorial services for John R. Cox, 72, Lakeview, will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at Southwest Virginia Community College in Richlands, Va. He was cremated.

Mr. Cox died Friday, July 30, 2004, at a Buffalo hospital.

He was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Salina, Kan., the son of John G. and Dorothy Lipe Cox. He grew up in Lawrence, Kan.

Mr. Cox was a graduate of Kansas University and Ball State University, and he obtained a doctorate from Virginia Tech University.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force major. He served as a rescue pilot in the Korean and Vietnam wars. After retiring from the Air Force he began teaching at Virginia Tech. He retired as chairman of the business division at Southwest Virginia Community College.

He married Georgia Pat Schrader on June 2, 1952, in Lawrence. They divorced. She survives. He married Margaret Presley on Sept. 5, 1987, in Tazewell, Va. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Chris Mahvi, Middleton, Wis., Cindy Sprague, Newport, Va., and Cathy Metz, Durango, Colo.; a stepson, Ralph Lovern, Jacksonville, N.C., a stepdaughter, Joni Lovern, Buffalo; a brother, Jerry, Coronado, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests donations to the Dr. John R. Cox Memorial Scholarship, SVCC Educational Foundation, Southwest Virginia Community College, Richlands, VA 24641.
