A Lawrence Police officer suffered a minor injury Wednesday night after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle that he and another officer were attempting to stop, police said.

The driver of the SUV then led police on a chase through Lawrence’s downtown area. The chase ended as police surrounded the SUV in a North Lawrence parking lot at North Second and Locust streets.

The incident began about 8:30 p.m. when two police officers in the parking lot behind the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center heard a loud, booming stereo coming from a Ford Explorer a block away on South Park Street, Sgt. Catherine Born said.

As the SUV pulled into the law enforcement center’s parking lot, two officers approached it on foot to talk to the driver, Born said. The stereo was turned down and the SUV kept moving despite the officers’ order to stop, Born said.

Police Sgt. Paul Fellers was struck by the SUV with enough force to knock him away and to the ground, Born said. The SUV then drove out of the lot and was seen by a third officer in his patrol car who attempted to stop it. Police pursued the SUV along New Hampshire Street, north across the Massachusetts Street bridge and into the North Lawrence parking lot. Speeds on New Hampshire were just barely above the 20 mph limit, Born said.

The 20-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger were to be booked into the Douglas County Jail, although it was unclear late Wednesday what the charges might be.

Fellers was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, Born said.
