Plans for southeast Lawrence pit housing against industrial needs

Tension between the needs for both industrial land and affordable housing may slow development plans for southeast Lawrence.

Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners heard this morning from economic development officials about the southeast area plan, which is mapping out the future of 1,300 acres south of the defunct Farmland fertilizer plant.

Developers want to build affordable housing there — and economic development officials said the plan should proceed.

But planning commissioners say the land may help fill the need for 1,000 acres of undeveloped industrial land.

The southeast plan goes before the commission in September.
