Stop on turnpike hazardous for driver

An Illinois man was injured Sunday morning when he was struck by a car on the Kansas Turnpike west of the west Lawrence exit.

Warren Smith Sr., 49, Auburn, Ill., was taken by ambulance to University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.

Smith had stopped a 1998 Lincoln on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes and was out of his car preparing to switch driving duties with a passenger, according to the Turnpike Patrol report. Smith was struck by 2001 Infinity driven by Margery Docking, 19, Wichita.

The Infinity then was struck from behind by a 1995 Mazda, driven by Denise Wesley, 34, Topeka.

Smith was the only one injured and there was no word on his condition late Sunday.

Seminar to focus on Internet research

Internet legal research will be the topic of a seminar Friday at the Kansas University School of Law.

The seminar, for attorneys, librarians and others who use legal research and information management, is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in 203 Green Hall. It is titled “The Law of Libraries and the Internet: New Developments and Basic Internet Legal Research.”

Topics will include the use of pornography filters by libraries; intellectual freedom issues, including the USA Patriot Act; and copyright law.
