Plane crashes near Eudora

? Federal officials Friday were investigating the emergency landing and crash of a small plane near here that left two people injured.

The yellow and black Grumman two-seater that came down Friday morning in a field northeast of Eudora took off with a pilot and passenger from New Century AirCenter in Gardner, said Trooper Josh Kellerman of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Perry resident Isse Bergstrom, 48, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released. The pilot, Robert G. Hutchinson, 50, of Gardner, also suffered minor injuries but chose not to go to the hospital, Kellerman said. Hutchinson owns the plane.

Bergstrom and Hutchinson denied interview requests. Kellerman said the two were acquaintances.

Kellerman said Hutchinson had taken off with no route planned when the engine of the 1971 aircraft either stalled or quit.

“It was an emergency landing,” Kellerman said. “I don’t think he had a choice. He had to try to set it down.”

The landing area Hutchinson picked was a recently plowed wheat field just off of North 1420 Road. The ground was soft enough that the plane’s wheels sunk in, causing its nose to drop down and dig into the soil, flipping the aircraft onto its top.

Kellerman said Hutchinson and Bergstrom were able to escape the crash on their own. At 9:44 a.m., Hutchinson called for assistance on a cell phone and emergency workers responded from Douglas and Johnson counties.

A LifeNet helicopter also responded, but did not transport victims. Bergstrom was taken to LMH by a ground ambulance, Kellerman said.

A Eudora Firefighter looks over a Grumman two-seater airplane that made an emergency landing in a plowed field northeast of Eudora. A passenger was transferred Friday by ground ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and the pilot sustained minor injuries but did not go to the hospital.

The Federal Aviation Administration was called to investigate the incident.

Kellerman said he did not think alcohol was involved. He said Hutchinson told him both occupants of the craft had on seat belts.
