Fred A. Gitzendanner

Services for Fred A. Gitzendanner, 91, Lawrence, will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Entombment will follow in Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park.

Mr. Gitzendanner died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.

He was born March 4, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Fred Eugene and Margaret Ruffel Gitzendanner. He and his wife moved to Lawrence from Sun City, Ariz., in 1990.

Mr. Gitzendanner received his master’s degree in business administration at the University of Chicago, and his engineering degree at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel and also received the Army Commendation Ribbon.

He was the manager of computing for Standard Oil/Amoco for 23 years. He managed the company’s entrance into and use of computers. He worked for the company for 30 years.

He was a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Management, American Petroleum Institute, American Standards Institute, American Society for Engineering Education, Sun City, Ariz. and Lawrence Kiwanis Clubs, Reserve Officers Assn., Retired Officers Assn., American Legion and Lawrence Country Club. He also was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and Stevens Alumni Assn.

He married Dorothy Carlson in 1936. She died in 1982. He then married Gladys E. O’Neal Cooley on Oct. 2, 1983, in Prairie Village. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Kenneth F., Angola, Ind., Ronald, Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Linda E. Hines, Ballwin, Mo.; one stepson, Gerald L. Cooley, Lawrence; one sister, Helen Vanderwaart, Punta Gorda, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests donations to Douglas County Hospice Care or the ALS Assn., sent in care of the mortuary.
