Katherine Kirk, a Lawrence attorney, recently was elected vice president for education of the Kansas Trial Lawyers Assn. Kirk practices with the law offices of Jerry K. Levy in Lawrence and Topeka. The firm limits its practice to personal injury litigation and family law. Kirk specializes in family law and professional negligence litigation.

Topeka-based Jayhawk File Express announces the hiring of four associates as the company continues expansion plans in Topeka and Lawrence. Jayhawk File Express produces services in records management, document destruction and media vaulting.

The new associates:

  • Bob Featherston Jr., director of business development. He manages the expansion efforts in Lawrence and continued development in Topeka. He previously worked for Morningstar Communications Co. in Overland Park.
  • Kris Hinrichsen, operations associate. He has joined the company part time to support client storage and document destruction needs. He is a student at Washburn University.
  • Ronda Petersen-Albright, customer service coordinator. She responds to client file management needs on a daily basis and ensures the company’s record systems are exceeding expectations. She previously worked for TeleTech, Topeka.
  • Mary McGivern, customer service associate. She is a part-time worker in customer service. She is a student at Kansas State University.

Kathleen Mason, Topeka, and Katherine Abel, Lawrence, have joined Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. as case managers. Working with senior clients, they will provide case management through assessments, coordination of services and monitoring of changing client needs.

Mason has a degree in social work from Washburn University. Abel has a degree in social work from the University of Montana.

Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. advocates on aging issues, builds community partnerships and starts programs within Shawnee, Douglas and Jefferson counties to help seniors live independent lives.

Karel Ramsey, caregiver program specialist for Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc., completed certification with the Workshop Leaders Training Program, which is conducted by the National Family Caregivers Assn. She can conduct family caregiver training sessions on how to communicate effectively with health care professionals. Ramsey is one of only 300 in the nation to receive this certification.

Aaron Gaspers, of the Peridian Group Inc., received his civil engineering license for the state of Kansas. Gaspers, who received his civil engineering degree from Kansas University, has been employed with Peridian Group for five years. As a licensed engineer, his responsibilities include overseeing production of street, storm, waterline and sanitary sewer improvement projects, professional development and management. Gaspers recently has been involved with the design of several projects in Lawrence, including East Lawrence sanitary sewer expansion; storm and roundabout improvements at Overland and Congressional Drives; 27th Street, Inverness Street and Crossgate Drive; and a drive box culvert at 27th Street and Crossgate Drive.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced that Central National Bank in Junction City has recently gained SBAExpress Lender status. SBAExpress Lenders are current participants with the SBA and meet certain portfolio standards. Central National Bank has several offices in Lawrence.

Lori Tochtrop, owner and director of Dance City Performing Arts, recently graduated from the Dance Educators of America three-year certification program in New York. The program consists of three levels of technical proficiency in dance and related subjects. It provides an up-to-date working syllabus covering the training of beginner through advanced students in dance. Related subjects are designed to coordinate with the technical aspects of teaching.

Bill Fair and Co. auctioneers Bill Fair and Hannah Fair attended the National Auctioneers Convention in July in Madison, Wis. The event attracted about 1,200 auctioneers. There were more than 100 seminars that covered topics such as selling modern office towers, voice control and ad composition. The Lecompton-based company is owned by Kathi Fair.

David Dunfield, of GLPM Architects, received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accreditation. The LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Dunfield has been practicing architecture for more than 10 years at GLPM Architects. He received master’s degrees in architecture and arts from Kansas University.

Dunfield has served as project manager on the following projects: Lawrence Arts Center, Free State High School, Langston Hughes School, Municipal Court Building, Basehor Public Library and Kansas University’s Ellsworth Hall.

Honors and awards

Chartlon-Manley Inc., Lawrence, received the Circle of Excellence award from Bituminous Insurance Cos., Rock Island, Ill., for its outstanding performance. The award was based on the company’s premium volume, quality and professionalism.

CornerBank has announced that Alice Ann Dowell Johnston is the Community Cornerstone Award recipient for July. In recognition of Johnston’s service, CornerBank will contribute $100 to the Salvation Army.

Johnston is the past president and a current director for the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She also is past president of the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and a current director on the Bert Nash center’s Endowment Board. She is president and a member of PEO Chapter AZ. She is a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church, where she has served as deacon and clerk of the council and volunteered at the Plymouth Thrift Shop. She is a past president of the New Generation Society of Lawrence and the former president of Native Daughters of Kansas.

Coming events

Emporia State University’s Small Business Development Center will offer a Sales and Withholding Tax Workshop to help people become more knowledgeable of tax procedures and processes.

The workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 in the National Teachers Hall of Fame building in the Glennen Board Room 112 at ESU.

Lawrence Professionals in Aging will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jade Mongolian Barbeque, 1511 W. 23rd St. Jefri Leonardi, community relations director at Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s Center for Rehabilitation, will talk about the grieving process. The cost for lunch is $11.50.
