Jets take Jones in fourth round

Kansas left tackle relieved to join New York

Adrian Jones didn’t receive the phone call he was hoping for Saturday afternoon.

Kansas University’s senior left tackle heard the good news Sunday morning.

“It’s real good to know where I’m going,” said Jones, who was selected by the New York Jets in the fourth round on the second day of the NFL Draft. “I didn’t think I was going to go in the fourth round. I was afraid I was going to fall to the fifth.”

The higher the round, the bigger the payday. Jones — who had hoped to be taken in the second or third round Saturday — was the 36th and final pick of round four and the 132nd pick overall. Sixteen offensive linemen, including nine tackles, were selected before the former Jayhawk.

“We actually thought he was one of the better athletes at that position in the draft,” scout Joey Clinkscales said on the Jets’ Web site.

As a fourth-round pick, Jones still will net a hefty signing bonus.

“He has a chance to sign a contract close to $1.8 million for four years with $300,000 up front,” said Craig Domann, Jones’ agent. “That’s not too bad.”

Jones (6-foot-4, 302 pounds) watched movies on Saturday and did a little shopping. He didn’t view much of the draft.

“I tried to keep my mind off it and not get too crazy about it,” he said. “It would have been nice to go the first day, but I’m still happy.”

Adrian Jones became only the fifth former Kansas University football player to be selected in the last seven NFL Drafts. The other four former Jayhawks drafted were Ron Warner by the New Orleans Saints in 1998, Moran Norris by the Saints in 2001, Nate Dwyer by the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 and Justin Hartwig by the Tennessee Titans in 2002.Warner is now with the Redskins, Norris with the Texans and Dwyer with the Seahawks. Hartwig remains with the Titans.

The call from the Jets finally came Sunday just before his name popped up on his television screen during ESPN’s broadcast.

“It was a huge relief,” said Jones, who will report Thursday to New York for a four-day minicamp. “I was kind of nervous.”

New York returns starting tackles Jason Fabini and Kareem McKenzie, who is in the final year of his contract.

“It’s a great situation for him,” Domann said of Jones. “They have two solid tackles, and after that it’s up for grabs. One of their tackle’s contract is up at the year, so they’re going to groom Adrian for that spot.”

Jones, a converted tight end who played only one year at left tackle, still has a lot to learn.

“He just needs to get more experience,” Domann said. “That’s it. He has the mental ability and physical tools. It’s just a matter of time.”

New York Jets draft pick Adrian Jones won’t be the only rookie from Kansas University in an NFL minicamp this week.Punter Curtis Ansel agreed to a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon.”I’ve got to say it feels pretty awesome, but I am definitely glad the waiting period is over,” said Ansel, a third-team All-Big 12 Conference selection who averaged 41.2 yards per punt last season and placed 19 of his 47 attempts inside opponents’ 20-yard line. “I am very happy to get a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream and have the opportunity for a shot to punt in the NFL.”Quarterback Bill Whittemore was not drafted and had not accepted a free-agent deal late Sunday.
