Free State teacher wins Rotary Club honor

Sam Rabiola, an English teacher at Free State High School, has been selected for this year’s Lawrence Rotary Club Educator of the Year Award.

Rabiola, who has taught in Lawrence since 1987, has been active in organizations including the Lawrence Education Assn. and National Honor Society.

Kansas’ early history subject of event

The history of Kansas before it became a territory will be the subject of a lecture later this month at the Watkins Community Museum of History.

Randy Thies, of the Kansas State Historical Society, will present “Life Before Territory — 1800-1854.” His presentation will provide a glance — through slides and commentary — at the truths and myths of Kansas before its establishment as a U.S. territory.

The presentation will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the museum, 1047 Mass.

The event is part of the museum’s Sesquicentennial Lecture Series, celebrating the founding of Lawrence 150 years ago. Upcoming events will depict the humor of Will Rogers and capture the daring of Amelia Earhart.

The presentations are sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council.

Catholic campus center host to ministry forum

St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center, 1631 Crescent Road, will be host to the second annual National Advancement Forum of the Catholic Campus Ministry Assn. today and Friday. The event is expected to attract between 75 and 100 lay and religious Catholic leaders from around the nation.

“What we’re trying to do is develop a wider awareness of the importance of Catholic campus ministry and to develop the benefactors, people who would financially support campus ministry at the level of colleges and universities,” said the Rev. Vince Krische, director of St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence is the Catholic ministry to Kansas University students, faculty and staff.
