Lions, Firebirds can’t match low scores

? The Free State High and Lawrence High boys golf squads placed 14th and 19th on Monday at the 19-team Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational at Falcon Lakes Golf Course.

The Firebirds shot a team total of 333, and the Lions recorded a 366.

Quinn Klutman paced Free State at 78, a low score that was good for 32nd overall. Daniel O’Connell and Jordan Mitchell each shot 89 to lead LHS.

LHS coach Ron Commons said mild weather conditions led to low scores and a tough field. Overland Park Aquinas won the event with a team total of 285 — Aquinas golfers turned in scores of 70, 71, 71 and 74 — and the top ten golfers shot 71 or less.

“There were some unbelievable scores turned in today, unfortunately none were from Lawrence High,” Commons said. “We’re looking for better things Monday.”

Free State coach Jack Schreiner equally was amazed by the low scores.

“It’s the best we’ve shot all year. Every single person on our team broke 90 and we take 14th of 19,” Schreiner said. “It tells you there are some really good golfers in this state, at least the ones who played today.

“Conditions were ideal,” Schreiner said. “The wind was perfect. It’s a new course in great shape. If there’s a day to shoot a low score, today was the day to do it.”

LHS and Free State travel Monday to the Topeka West Invitational. FSHS also will play Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst in a dual Thursday at Lawrence Country Club.
