‘Monster’ director to attend film screening

Lawrence native Patty Jenkins, director of the Academy-award winning film, “Monster,” will speak with students at Kansas University after a screening of the movie at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The event, hosted by Student Union Activities, will be in Woodruff Auditorium on the fifth floor of the Kansas Union.

Tickets are $10 for students who present a KUID and $15 for nonstudents or those without identification.

‘Two Mommies’ author to speak on gay issues

Author Leslea Newman will come today to Kansas University to discuss gay marriage, homophobia and censorship.

Newman, author of more than 40 books, including “Heather Has Two Mommies,” will present “Heather’s Mommy Speaks Out: Homophobia, Censorship, and Family Values” at 8 p.m. in Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union. She will sign books after the lecture.

The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Campus Life and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender resource coordinator’s office. It is free and open to the public.

Fund-raiser

KU plans second Relay for Life event

Kansas University will have its second annual Relay For Life on May 7-8 at Memorial Stadium.

The event is a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society. Teams of participants take turns walking or running the track for 12 hours.

The relay will begin at 6 p.m. May 7 with a cancer survivors’ lap. Each survivor is introduced and then all will walk, run or wheelchair the opening lap.
