HINU sweeps on Senior Night

Indians enjoy super sendoff with wins over Ottawa

Haskell Indian Nation University seniors Julie Sharp, Terri Slinkey, and Jamie Tanner each received goodies before Wednesday’s Senior Day game, but HINU’s two victories were softball coach Gary Tanner’s favorite gifts.

The Indians collected a five-inning, 10-1 victory over Ottawa University in the first game of its doubleheader at Lady Indian Softball Field, then followed with a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

“Two wins, there can’t be a better gift than that,” Tanner said. “This has been one of the best weeks we’ve had this season. We have been practicing well all week, plus we’ve almost completely gotten over all the injuries we’ve suffered this season. And then the ladies went out there and put it all together today.”

Even before the start of the first game, Haskell players had to think Wednesday was going to be special.

The seniors were honored in a short ceremony, where they received beach ball-sized team-autographed baseballs, framed pictures and a goodie bag with a different gift from each teammate.

“It was awesome, it felt like Christmas,” Sharp said.

Haskell started the first game strong with a three-run first inning, then Katie Smith led off HINU’s five-run fifth with a solo home run.

The Indians rolled behind pitcher Katie Renwick, who won both games and allowed just two hits in the opener.

HINU’s hot bats continued in the second game, when the Indians scored all six of their runs in the first and second innings.

“We’ve kind of been in a hole all season. … but I really think we’re on a roll right now, and it all kind of culminated here with these two wins,” Tanner said.
