Eudora softball sweeps BHS

? Eudora High’s softball team made the most of two innings in two games against Baldwin to sweep the Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon, 8-2 and 7-3.

In the first contest, the Cardinals were down 2-1 going into the seventh inning when they scored seven runs en route to the 8-2 victory.

Eudora (4-0) registered just four hits in that huge inning, but received some help from Baldwin (0-4).

“Softball’s a game where you put the ball in play and good things are going to happen,” EHS coach Cara Kimberlin said. “That’s what we did that inning.”

Eudora pitcher Kelly Spence used her riseball to flummox the Bulldogs, who, she said, favored the ball low.

“I’m not as hesitant as last year,” Spence said. “I know I have eight players backing me up.”

Spence came up with eight strikeouts in the first game and six in the second game.

She pitched 116 of Eudora’s 136 innings last year and so far has pitched all 28 innings on the season.

“She’s the worker on the team,” Kimberlin said.

Eudora High's Kelly Spence releases a pitch against Baldwin. The Cardinals swept a twinbill with the Bulldogs on Tuesday at Baldwin.

The second game bore a shocking resemblance to the first, with Eudora finding magic in a five-run fifth.

BHS coach Ginny Honomichl wasn’t thrilled with the two losses, but she said the mistakes her club made were easily correctable.

“In these two games we only had one bad inning in both,” Honomichl said. “We didn’t spread the crime over the innings.”

Eudora will travel Saturday to Anderson County. Baldwin will travel Thursday to Gardner-Edgerton.
