College Republicans sponsor Ryun visit

Kansas Congressman Jim Ryun will be the featured speaker tonight at the monthly meeting of the Kansas University College Republicans.

Ryun will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Jayhawk Room of the Kansas Union. The meeting is open to the public.

Ryun is a KU graduate and a former member of the U.S. Olympic track team who has represented Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District since 1996.

Burn foundation to benefit from dinner

Patrons of Lawrence’s two Applebee’s restaurants tonight will be helping burn victims through the Midwest Regional Burn Foundation.

Firefighters with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical will wait tables from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at both locations, 3900 W. Sixth St. and 2520 Iowa. The restaurant will donate a portion of food sales and servers will donate their tips to the foundation.

The foundation is an independent, nonprofit volunteer organization that helps burn patients recover and rehabilitate. It also helps fund research.

Police arrest suspect in impersonation case

Police say they suspect a 30-year-old Roeland Park man of trying to pass himself off as a federal law-enforcement agent.

Some of the man’s acquaintances who live in Lawrence told police he regularly carried a badge and a firearm and described himself as an agent with an unknown federal department. They turned him in after checking his name with the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, Lawrence police said.

The man was arrested Friday and booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of false impersonation. He has not yet been charged and will appear April 27 in District Court.

He also is suspected of stealing a Lawrence resident’s Tiger Woods watch valued at more than $6,500. According to a report, the suspect was supposed to be paying for the watch in installments.

The watch has been recovered.
