Rowing leads list of events on tap

KU baseball, softball, tennis also slated for this weekend

Kansas State swept five of six rowing events from Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown in November in Manhattan.

The Jayhawks will be looking to turn the tables in the Kansas Cup today on the Kansas River at Burcham Park. Cincinnati University also will be on hand for the races that will begin at 10 a.m.

KU has won the spring Kansas Cup trophy for five years running, but the Wildcats showed “from the fall race they will be a strong challenge for us, as will Cincinnati,” KU coach Rob Catloth said.

The last race of the day, the Varsity 8, is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The KU baseball team will play host to Texas A&M this weekend at Hoglund Ballpark; the Jayhawks’ softball team today is in College Station, Texas, to tangle with the Aggies.

The KU softball squad (23-17, 2-4 Big 12) and Texas A&M (23-16, 5-1 Big 12) will tangle in an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader. The two teams originally were scheduled to play single games today and Sunday, but the change was made to avoid playing on Easter.

Also competing in Lawrence today will be KU’s tennis team.

The Jayhawks will attempt to end a three-game homestand on a high note with a win over Baylor at 1 p.m. today at Robinson Center courts.

The Jayhawks (5-11, 3-3) enter the contest coming off a 6-1 thumping by No. 15 Oklahoma. To make matters worse, the team’s top singles player, Courtney Steinbock, has been sidelined because of an ankle injury that she suffered in a 5-2 win over Iowa State on April 3.
