Cary, N.C. ? Kansas University’s men’s golf team finished 14-under par Friday to lead the 2004 Intercollegiate at the par-72 MacGregor Downs Country Club course.

KU opened the two-day tournament with a first-round total of 5-under-par 283, then followed with a second-round 9-under 279 for a two-round total of 562.

“Today was a really good day for the Jayhawks, 14-under par on a difficult golf course,” KU coach Ross Randall said. “We’re really pleased about that. To be leading in such a strong field is exciting. Hopefully we can continue to play well tomorrow.”

The Jayhawks, ranked 25th nationally, lead No. 23 Duke, in second place after carding a two-round total of 565. Eleventh-ranked Minnesota shot a 575, and trails KU by 13 strokes in third place.

KU junior Kevin Ward had rounds of 70 and 66 for a total of 136 to place in a tie for second. Senior Tyler Hall is tied for fourth after carding a scores of 71 in the first round and 68 in the second round, for a two-round 139 total.

KU freshman Tyler Docking is tied for eighth place after he had scores of 68 and 73, and junior Andrew Price is tied for 23rd after a 74 and 72. Freshman Gary Woodland is in 78th place after rounds of 76 and 82.

Kansas will complete tournament action starting at 8 this morning.
