Former media mogul to open restaurant near Kansas Speedway

? A bison-themed restaurant co-owned by former media giant Ted Turner is among three new businesses slated for the Village West retail development in western Kansas City, Kan.

Architects for Ted’s Montana Grill, a chain that opened its first restaurant two years ago in Columbus, Ohio, have submitted plans for a 4,620-square-foot restaurant to the Kansas City, Kan., Planning Commission. The commission will vote Monday on whether to recommend the plan. Its agenda also includes proposals for a Sheridan’s Frozen Custard and an Amini’s Galleria.

The three businesses would be the latest additions to the $400 million development anchored by Nebraska Furniture Mart and Cabela’s and situated near the Kansas Speedway.

A spokeswoman for Ted’s Montana Grill said she was unaware of the Kansas City, Kan., proposal and could not say when the restaurant was scheduled to open.

According to the restaurant’s Web site, the chain has 19 locations in eight states, including several in Georgia. Two are planned for Wichita.

The restaurant’s menu emphasizes bison — bison burgers, bison prime rib, bison short ribs and the like. Beef burgers, chicken and fish are also served.

The restaurants’ atmosphere, the Web site says, takes its cue from early 20th-century arts-and-crafts architecture, with tin ceilings, mahogany and metal crown moldings.

Sheridan’s Frozen Custard, which had announced more than a year ago that it would come to Village West, is a local chain with 13 stores in the metropolitan area. Franchises also exist in several other states.

Amini’s Galleria is a retail furnishings store that specializes in Oriental rugs, bar stools, dining furniture and pool tables. It has one store in Overland Park and two in Oklahoma.
