Better targets

To the editor:

After seeing Mr. Chappelle’s March 31 letter about Wal-Mart, I felt like it was the right time to put in my two cents. As a former Wal-Mart assistant manager, I applaud Mr. Chappelle for writing a letter to the editor and including in all of the benefits Wal-Mart brings to its employees and the community.

Personally, I think the City Commission can find better things to do than to “change” zoning regulations and requirements every time Wal-Mart brings a new proposal to the table for the Sixth and Wakarusa area. If that is the case, then I think I will petition the Kansas University Student Senate every time I feel something is wrong with one of my classes. If I do not like the time one of my classes meets, does that mean I can petition to have the meeting time changed? I am sure the City Commission has better things to be doing than to focus all of its efforts on stopping a business from building in our great city.

If the area of concern was going to be such a problem, why was it developed in the first place? Did everyone think that no one would ever go out there once it got developed? And of course, why would we want a company to come into our city and create more jobs? I am sure some of the 2,800 unemployed in Lawrence surely would not mind.
