Dhwani Shah has been inducted into the National Beta Club at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C., by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average. Shah is a junior at the independent, college-preparatory school for young women. She is the daughter of Naina and Kiran Shah, Lawrence.

  • Felicia Freeman, a Free State High School student, has been named a Presidential Scholar at Central College, Pella, Iowa. To be named a scholar, students must have at least a 3.75 grade-point average, an ACT score of 28 or rank No. 1 in their graduating class. They must participate in extracurricular activities at school and in the community. They also complete an essay, interview and problem-solving component at the college. Felicia is the daughter of Alfred and Cheryl Freeman.
  • Wakarusa Valley School’s chess team won the 12th-place trophy in the K-6 Championship Division April 2-4 at the National Elementary Scholastic Chess Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa. Members of the team are Kenny Blevins, Benjamin Harms, Douglas Rawlings and Roy Wedge. They also garnered the 11th-place trophy in the K-6 Blitz national championships.

Individually, Roy Wedge was the top finisher for the team with four wins and a draw in seven matches. He received the first-place trophy in the Under 1000 rated player category.

Quail Run School’s chess team placed fifth in the K-6 division at the national championships. Jed Borovik, who had five wins, received the 24th place trophy for individuals.

At the Kansas State Championships, Wakarusa Valley placed third and won a trophy. Individually, the following students placed in the top 10 at state: Benjamin Harms, Wakarusa Valley, second; Ricky Bellinger, Broken Arrow, fourth; and Roy Wedge, Wakarusa Valley, sixth.
