Free State softball takes pair

? Free State High’s softball team batted out 18 hits and allowed just seven in a doubleheader sweep Thursday of Leavenworth.

Ashley Wagner (2-0) allowed five hits in a complete-game, 6-1 victory in the opener, and Felicia Freeman (1-1) surrendered two hits in the full five innings of a 10-0 win in the nightcap, which was shortened to five innings because of the run rule.

“I was pleased with the girls,” FSHS coach Pam Pine said. “They played well. Ashley and Felicia pitched well. We looked better. I thought they did a good job.”

Alli Hock led the Firebirds (3-1) with six hits in eight at-bats for the day. Livi Abney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the opener, Brooke Abney had two RBIs and Jamie Stanclift doubled with an RBI.

In Game Two, Wagner went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Stanclift tripled, went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Emily Leiker and Livi Abney each drove in a run.

“We did leave a few runners on base,” Pine opined. “We left eight on in the first game and nine in the second, so we had some more opportunities. But we did a pretty good job.”

FSHS will face Shawnee Mission Northwest on Tuesday at the Johnson County Girls Athletic Assn. fields.
