Laura J. Owens

Services for Laura J. Owens, 89, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Owens died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 21, 1915, in Hurdland, Mo., the daughter of R.R. and Lillian Sophia Gelbach Humphrey. She graduated from Eskridge High School in 1933. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Kansas University in 1937 and a master’s degree in child development from the University of Iowa in 1939. She moved to Lawrence with her husband in 1945.

Mrs. Owens and her husband purchased Wards Flower Shop and Greenhouse in 1946, which later was renamed Owens Flower Shop and Greenhouse.

She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Countryside Garden Club, the Twentieth Century Club and Plymouth Congregational Church. She was active with Lawrence arts and historic preservation organizations and committees.

She married James Owens on Sept. 28, 1940, in Miami. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Laura Schulte, Lawrence; a son, Martin Owens, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Justine Owens Hardy, died earlier.

The family suggests memorials to the Laura Owens Memorial Fund for the Beautification of Lawrence South Park, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
