FSHS takes nightcap, falls in opener

? Ashley Wagner pitched a four-hit shutout, and Brooke Abney doubled home Chloe Hall in the seventh inning to give Free State a 1-0 victory over Olathe South on Tuesday in the second game of a high school softball doubleheader.

Olathe South won the first game of the season-opening twinbill, 3-2.

“The girls played really well,” Free State coach Pam Pine said. “This was our first win against Olathe South in our seven years. Ashley pitched really well, and we battled back after losing the first game. I’m very pleased.”

Livi Abney drove in each of the Firebirds’ runs in the first game.

Free State (1-1) will play Thursday at Leavenworth.
