Free State dominates home triangular

Free State High girls swimming coach Jama Crady downplayed her squad’s performance at a home triangular meet Tuesday with Lawrence High and Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The Lions and Cougars might disagree with that assessment.

The Firebirds were queens of the chlorine, winning the meet by 104 points after scoring a total of 298 at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. The Lions came in second at 194 points, followed by SM Northwest (180).

Free State finished first in nine of the 12 events. Sophomore Ashley Robinson (200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and freshman Katie Swank (50 free and 100 free) each won two individual events.

“I am overjoyed with the team we have this year. So far, I’m happy with our results,” said junior Ashley Jackson, who qualified for state in the 500 free and 100 fly.

Still, Crady — who has had more than a handful of swimmers qualify for state — knows her team can do more.

“We have a lot of yardage to do. We need to sprint,” Crady said. “We’re moving in the right direction, but we have a long way to go.”

Robinson was 10 seconds behind her school-record time in the 200 freestyle, notching a state-qualifying mark of 1.56.77. She already had qualified in the 500 free and 100 fly.

The Lions had two team members qualify for state — Kristi Rudman in the 100 breaststroke, and diver Ellie Lloyd, who finished first after a score of 189.95.

LHS coach Ryan Adams said his team had “housekeeping” to do in the early season.

“We’re still in the part of the season where we’re getting in shape,” Adams said. “We’re still not where I want us to be, but we’re getting there. Time-wise, we have a lot of girls that can take off a couple of seconds.”

Free State and Lawrence High travel Saturday to the Olathe Invite to take on several of the state’s top teams, including Olathe East and Shawnee Mission East.

“Saturday should be our first real test,” Crady said.
