Niang’s future undecided

Moulaye Niang is not ready to make an announcement about his future on Kansas University’s men’s basketball team.

Niang, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center from Senegal, Africa, met with KU coach Bill Self on Monday for the second time in a week about the possibility of transferring.

“We visited, and we’re going to visit some more. It’s not that far in the process,” Self said. “It’s too early in the process.”

It has been speculated that Niang, who was unavailable for comment, has decided to transfer over playing-time issues and eventually will announce his intentions to leave.

KU aide, St. John’s talk

Kansas University associate head coach Norm Roberts on Monday interviewed for the head-coaching vacancy at St. John’s.

Roberts, who hails from Queens, N.Y., met with St. John’s president Donald Harrington at the SJU campus in New York.

Former KU aide Matt Doherty also has interviewed for the job and has discussed salary figures and terms of a contract with SJU officials, the New York Daily News reported.

Other candidates include Providence’s Tim Welsh and DePaul’s Dave Leitao, who will interview today.

It is believed the University of Miami wants to talk to Roberts about its vacancy. Manhattan’s Bobby Gonzalez is the favorite for that job.

Hairston to meet with Self

Malik Hairston, a 6-foot-6 high school senior guard from Detroit’s Renaissance High, will meet with Kansas coach Bill Self and coaches of his other finalists this week.

Hairston’s dad told Shay Wildeboor of rivals.com that “Kansas will be one of the schools to meet with us. We plan to have a decision in the next five to seven days.”

His other finalists are believed to be UCLA and Michigan and perhaps Ohio State. The month-long late signing period starts April 14.
