Lecompton, Basehor residents head to polls

This is an off-election year for city and school posts in Lawrence, but voters are heading to the polls today for city elections in Lecompton and Basehor.

Lecompton residents will elect three city council members. Four candidates are running, including Ed Smith, an incumbent who appointed himself to the council last year after losing his mayoral re-election bid.

Smith is serving the unexpired term of Nick Fergus, who resigned last year. Others running for the council seats are Chuck Folks, who works for Action Plumbing; Jennifer Jones, who works for the Topeka/Shawnee County Public Library; and Leah Ann Nichols, who works for Sagebrush Corp. and as a Mary Kay consultant.

The polls are open until 7 tonight at Lecompton City Hall, 327 Elmore St.

Lecompton has 351 registered voters. In the last election two years ago, only 46 people voted.

In Basehor, voters will cast ballots on a $3.79 million bond issue that would finance the bulk of a new town library.

Basehor has 4,999 registered voters.
