Lawrence teen donates $200 for chimpanzee

Thirteen-year-old Spencer Higginson, of Lawrence, came away from a trip to the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan determined to help a good cause: He spent the past year saving $200 to “adopt” a zoo chimpanzee as part of the ZOOParent adoption program.

“I saw an adoption brochure, and I thought that I could help the zoo, and I thought it would be cool to adopt an animal,” Higginson said in a press release.

ZOOParent adoptions contribute to the animals’ care, veterinary bills and habitat upkeep. Adoption categories range from $15-$200 (Higginson chose the highest-cost adoption category.)
