Cosby to have first appearance before judge

Lafayette Cosby, who has been arrested in connection with the Sunday morning shooting death of Robert Tyrone Martin, will have his first appearance before a Douglas County judge this afternoon.

Cosby was arrested on a warrant Monday night in Topeka. The warrant accuses the 24-year-old Cosby of first-degree murder in Martin’s death. Martin’s body was found early Sunday morning at the Jefferson Commons apartment complex in south Lawrence.

At his first appearance, Cosby is expected to be read formal charges from the district attorney’s office and the judge is expected to set bond and appoint an attorney for him.

This is the second time that Cosby has been charged in connection with a slaying.

The last time was in 1997, when Cosby — then 18 — was charged with voluntary manslaughter after stabbing and killing David E. Walker Jr. in a fight at Colony Woods apartments, 1301 W. 24th St.

Cosby was acquitted by a jury that found he had acted in self defense.

Coincidentally, Martin was friends with Walker and some see a possible connection between the two deaths.
