Group offers to screen children’s development

Children ages 3 to 5 are eligible for free developmental screenings the morning of April 21 at Christ’s Covenant Church, 2312 Harvard Road.

The screenings are offered by Lawrence Early Childhood Special Services.

Center plans events for autism awareness

The Autism Asperger Resource Center has scheduled several events for April, which is Autism Awareness Month. The center operates out of the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

The center will have the first Walk for Autism on April 17 at Longview Community College in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Registration runs from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The third annual bowl-a-thon for children’s autism will be April 24 at Incred-a-Bowl in Overland Park.

One out of 250 babies born in the United States will develop some form of autism, and 1.5 million Americans have autism, according to the center. Symptoms include difficulty in understanding others, appearing deaf, having trouble speaking and repetitive behaviors.

Eudora elementary plans kindergarten roundup

Eudora — Nottingham Elementary School in Eudora will have its kindergarten roundup April 22-23, by appointment only, at the school, 1428 Elm St.

A parent meeting to schedule an appointment and gather information will be at 7 p.m. April 19 at the school.

Before the roundup sessions, parents should acquire a certified birth certificate and gather health information for their child, including a Kansas Certificate of Immunization record and physical exam/personal health history. A dental examination is optional.

Children must have been born on or before Aug. 31, 1999, to enter kindergarten in fall 2004.
