Kansas Relays need volunteers

The annual Kansas Relays will be in Lawrence April 15-17, and more volunteers are needed for the event. Volunteers will help deliver food to officials, direct athletes from one area to another, post results, retrieve items such as shots or discus and answer phones. Those who volunteer for four hours or more will receive a T-shirt and meals while they are working. Informational meetings for volunteers will be at 7 p.m. April 11 and 12 at Memorial Stadium.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Douglas County Senior Meals program still needs a volunteer at the Lawrence Senior Center meal site, 745 Vt. The volunteer will help package lunches for home delivery and assist with serving those who dine at the site. Volunteers are asked to make a regular commitment, which may be arranged to fit their schedules. For more information, call Kathryn Newman, 842-0543. Senior Meals delivery volunteers also are needed throughout Douglas County, including in Eudora and Baldwin. For more information, call Mary Phelps, 842-0543.
  • The Youth Volunteer Council will have its next meeting from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the United Way building, 2518 Ridge Court. Teens interested in volunteering are welcome to attend. The group will be discussing the upcoming Day of Caring; the Free State Recycle Challenge; Black, White and Read All-over; and other volunteer service project ideas for this summer.   • Serenata Farms needs volunteers, age 14 and older, to help youths with disabilities participate in horse-riding lessons. A volunteer orientation will be offered at 7 p.m. April 12 at Serenata Farms for new volunteers or people interested in learning about the program.   • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is coordinating the Spring Day of Caring, which is April 24. Volunteer teams will be matched to a project to assist a charity or nonprofit organization, such as improving play equipment, landscaping, news-letter folding or yard work for homebound seniors.
