Distance runners spark KU

? Kansas University juniors Chris Jones was fifth and D.J. Hilding 15th in the 5,000-meter run during Saturday’s final day of the Texas Relays.

Jones finished in 14 minutes, 52.23 seconds; Hilding, a Lawrence High product, was clocked at 15:20.03.

Joshy Madathil, Jeremy Mims, Brandon Hodges and Benson Chesang finished fifth in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:46.30. Brett Terp recorded a 10th-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches. Gavin Ball finished eighth in the University/College Section A shot put with a throw of 57 feet.

The 4×800 meter relay team of Brandon Hodges, Abraham Kimeli, Madathil and Mims was 11th with a time of 7:41.67. Kimeli also was third in the 1,500 with a time of 3:48.99.

On the women’s side, the distance medley relay team of Laura Lavoie, Octavia Garrett, Kim Clark and Megan Manthe finished seventh with a time of 11:39.81. Senior Jamie Waters was 20th in the hammer throw with a mark of 165-5.
