One suspect arrested in forged-checks case

Police have arrested one of three Lawrence residents suspected of forging checks belonging to a Eudora senior citizen killed in a fire in February 2003.

Police on Wednesday said they’d arrested a 22-year-old woman in connection with the case. She posted a $2,500 bond at the Douglas County Jail and was ordered to appear in court April 13. Prosecutors must decide by that date whether to file charges against her.

Police arrested the woman after receiving information from a business where she had tried to use a check belonging to Naomi Kidd, 77, who died Feb. 6, 2003, in a fire at her Eudora home.

Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman, would not say whether there was a relationship between Kidd and the suspect because of an ongoing investigation.

Police still believe there are two more people involved in the forgeries, a Lawrence man and woman, Pattrick said.

Police investigate lewd behavior report

A 30-year-old Lawrence woman told police a man exposed himself to her while he sat in a car in southwest Lawrence.

The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. Monday in the 2400 block of Clinton Parkway near First Presbyterian Church, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

The woman told police the man was driving a purple Dodge four-door vehicle. Police are investigating the incident as a case of lewd and lascivious conduct.

Cross-dresser robs bank at gunpoint

Police are searching Wednesday for a man who dressed like a woman to rob a bank at gunpoint.

The robbery Tuesday morning was the second in March after a 10-year span without bank robberies in Garden City.

Police described the suspect as a white male about 6 feet tall who wore a light-colored dress with blue flowers, a brown wig and a cap.

“Every witness that saw this person said it was very obvious it was a man,” Garden City Police Capt. Mike Utz said.

The suspect entered a Commerce Bank armed with a handgun, demanded cash and left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money, Utz said.

On March 3, a man who is still at large robbed a bank wearing a hockey mask and a gray-hooded sweatshirt.

The last bank robbery in Garden City before March was in October of 1993.

Royals’ opening day to include KU ROTC

The Kansas University Marine and Naval ROTC Honor Guard will present the colors Monday as the Kansas City Royals open their season with a 2:10 p.m. game at Kauffman Stadium.

The KU group is one of five honor guards participating in pre-game ceremonies, which include “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by Christian group Mercy Me. Other honor guards are from the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department’s Tactical Response Team, the U.S. Army Kansas City Recruiting Battalion, Whiteman Air Force Base and the Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department.

Pre-game festivities also include an appearance by Challenger, a trained bald eagle, and a flyover by A-10 Warthogs from Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo.

The Royals play the Chicago White Sox.
